It’s official. Shakira is the most popular woman in the world with the most “likes” on Facebook.
On Friday, July 18, the Grammy-winning singer from Colombia became the first even person on Facebook to reach 100 million likes. On attaining this incredible feat, the 37-year-old singer said that she’s honored and humbled about this milestone. She also said that social media, and specially Facebook has helped her other artists alike to bringing the gap between the stage and audience.
When asked Shakira via email about how she felt about reaching the 100-million fan milestone, she said it’s just an “unfathomable number”. She said that having the most popular Facebook page is something she really never anticipated, but it’s been a very welcoming and heartwarming surprise.
However, it’s not her accomplishment that made her the most popular person on Facebook. She has been posting specific benchmarks to her fans, like surpassing the 50 million mark, which made her the biggest celebrity on Facebook beating fellow pop star Rihanna back in March. Shakira’s image also got a big boost during this year’s World Cup in Brazil, with which she has been associated for a long time. She also performed at the closing ceremony in Rio de Janeiro earlier this month. The World Cup generated over 3 billion Facebook interactions, such as comments, likes, posts and shares from 350 million people.
Even Facebook CEO and founder Mark Zuckerberg is ecstatic. He congratulated Shakia and wrote on her page that it’s an amazing milestone for an amazing person.
Based in Menlo Park, California, Facebook is the largest social media networking site in the world with over a billion active users.
To honor her achievement, the singer and activist has posted a retrospective video of her most memorable Facebook moments through the years, including her charity works, album covers, a photo of her being pregnant, and adorable pictures of her 18-month-old son, Milan. She also posted a video thanking her fans for supporting her as well.
